I've made a couple of these and Amber loves them.
It's a great option for shorts that are a little too short or pants that have worn out, aaaaand it's super easy.
We upcycled these shorts because the crotch was one of those that just hangs weird. It was about three inches past where it should have been, but it was perfect for this project because the extra length gave me plenty of room to work around the pockets.
Cut the legs off so you have basically the waist, zipper, and pockets left.
It looks like a mini skirt.
Cut two strips of fabric.
One 22 inches wide x 7 inches long and one 30 inches wide x 7 inches long (this allows for 1/2 in. seams).
These will be for the ruffles.
(This is for a size 6 girls skirt... you would have to adjust these measurements depending on what size skirt you want to make.
Honestly, I was winging it. You just want to make sure that you have enough fabric width so that when you sew it on you have plenty extra to gather.
We are making ruffles after all.)
Sew the same-size strips right sides together.
Your going to use the 22 inch wide strips first.
Sew a basting stitch, gather the fabric, and then pin it to the jean 'skirt'.
Sew it on.
This is what it should look like.
Now repeat with the 30 inch wide strips of fabric. Baste. Stitch. Gather. Pin. Sew.
Once the second layer of fabric is sewn on you can hem it up.
I like to do a top stitch too. It's optional, but it goes a long way in making clothes look more 'polished'.
Done already.
I told you it was easy!
